.........."I hope Obama Fails."

Rush Limbaugh told his listeners that he was asked by “a major American print publication” to offer a 400-word statement explaining his “hope for the Obama presidency.” He responded:

So I’m thinking of replying to the guy, “Okay, I’ll send you a response, but I don’t need 400 words, I need four: I hope he fails.” (interruption) What are you laughing at? See, here’s the point. Everybody thinks it’s outrageous to say. Look, even my staff, “Oh, you can’t do that.” Why not? Why is it any different, what’s new, what is unfair about my saying I hope liberalism fails? Liberalism is our problem. Liberalism is what’s gotten us dangerously close to the precipice here. Why do I want more of it? I don’t care what the Drive-By story is. I would be honored if the Drive-By Media headlined me all day long: “Limbaugh: I Hope Obama Fails.” Somebody’s gotta say it.

In response, I say; "I hope any President of the United States is successful as he/she leads our country. As I may disagree with the full agenda, I want our country to be successful. If the President is not successful, our country will fail as a result. My proof? The past eight years!"

I saw a transcript of an interview Rush did with another network. That's where I heard the qualifying "if his policies are socialist." This version is obviously more blunt. He gets his point across. I'm pretty sure the reaction from you and others is exactly what he wanted. The point is (and I'm not suggesting you did this) many people desperately wanted Bush to fail. Anti-Bush sentiment was hysterical long before even the 2004 election (which he won, by the way). There might even be an argument that anti-Bush sentiment crippled American foreign policy as well as the economy. (Remember Bush tried to reform Freddie Mac and Fannie Mae? Tried to reform social security? Both times, democrats said took a if-it-ain't-broke-don't-fix-it approach. We see now that they were broke. Even SNL recognized the truth a few weeks ago in a great skit with Bush and Pelosi.) Iraq was a disaster--no defense for Bush there. I'm not a Bush fan, I'm just trying to see reality through all the hype. And Rush is mocking the hype. By saying he hopes Obama fails, he's mocking all the people who wanted Bush to fail. But, it was OK (i.e. politically correct) to want to Bush to fail. I've listened to Rush a long time and he loves to get people riled up. You have to filter him. It's like to have to filter Brokaw or Olbermann or Anderson Cooper... but backwards. The truth is somewhere in the middle.

Limbaugh is a businessman. He makes millions preying upon polarized politics. I've listened to him off and on since 1993, and I compare him to a political version of Howard Stern - a shock-jock, and nothing more. His views are useless to decide what is really important for Americans. As for the financial mess with Freddie and Fannie, I don't belive for one minute that Bush and company had any idea of the crisis that was to come; if they did, there would have been more done. Any president would have done something, rather than wait to see what would happen. And you are right about Social Security. Bush did attempt to reform SS; but, can you imagine what would have happend with more private investment with SS funds in our stock market? We can't trust American business to take care of SS. I want America to be successful; and if that comes at the hands of a Republican, I'm all for it. I hope that we all could think like that. I just can't be a die-hard party man and nothing else. The Democratic Party, of which I'm a registered voter with, has flaws. I will vote with and support them only when I agree with their policy. If a Republican can further my views, I'll go with them. Independents don't really exist, do they? I really enjoy talking politics with you. We're often have different views, but I really enjoy the debate.
